Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen collects
crayons for sick children
By TIFFANY ARNOLD /
August 13, 2010
Full article

WILLIAMSPORT - In less than two weeks,
Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen Mary Teal Mulligan will flash
her first smile and wave at the crowd at the Miss America
Outstanding Teen competition. But the Williamsport teenager
can only think of one thing: crayons. Ever since Mary earned the title of Miss
Maryland Outstanding Teen in June, she's been fixated on
crayons - how to get them, how to get paper for them and how
to deliver the crayons to sick, hospitalized children who
will appreciate them. It's a project she's calling Coins for
Crayons. "What kid doesn't like to draw with crayons?" said
Mary, a 17-year-old rising senior at Barbara Ingram School
for the Arts.

To Represent
Maryland at National
Sweetheart Pageant
National Sweetheart is
an annual pageant held
in Hoopeston, Illinois,
during its National
Sweet Corn Festival over
the Labor Day weekend.
It is sponsored by the
Hoopeston Jaycees. Even
though there is no
affiliation with the
Miss America
Organization, it uses
the same judging system.
Not every state sends
contestants to National
Sweetheart each year.
21 of the 61
National Sweetheart
winners later competed
in the Miss America
national pageants.
Of them, 5 won the Miss
America title and 11
others were finalists or
semi-finalists. As
well, future Miss
Americas included
participants Pam Eldred
of Michigan (1970) and
Rebecca King of Colorado
(1974) and Katie Harman
of Oregon (2002).

The Miss Maryland
Organization! We are an official preliminary of
the Miss America Organization one of
the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest
provider of scholarship assistance for young women.
Last year, the Miss
America Organization and its state and local organizations made
available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This
assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss
America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in
the state and local competitions as well.
Rich in history and social significance, the Miss America Organization
has maintained a tradition for
many decades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and
professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their
opinions, talent and intelligence. Scholarships have been the
cornerstone of the Miss America program since 1945 when Bess Myerson was
the first Miss America to receive a scholarship from the Organization.
Participating in the Miss America system not only helps you pay
for college and prepare for a career, it also provides an opportunity to
gain additional life experience, work on issues of importance to
society, and enhance your personal and professional skills while developing
your performance-related and other talents.
